This DOT Hazmat Basic General Awareness online course is a 4-hour introductory course for all employees involved in the transportation of hazardous materials and meets the DOT's requirements for General Awareness training. For a more in-depth version of this course, you can take our 10-hour DOT Hazmat Advanced General Awareness course. Both courses include the mandatory Security Awareness Module.
All workers employed in an industry that involves the preparation or transportation of hazardous materials must have DOT General Awareness training. This includes not just drivers and manufacturers, but anyone who manufactures, repairs, or reconditions containers used to transport hazardous materials.
This course will provide students with an understanding of the wide variety of hazardous materials regulated by the US Department of Transportation (DOT); a basic description of how to use the hazardous materials table and navigate the DOT regulations; when specific hazard labels, placards, and markings are required, as well as exceptions to the requirements; and packaging requirements for hazardous materials.
Upon completion of this course you will receive a certificate of completion and a wallet identification card, as well as continued access to the material should you require it.
This course can be taken as initial training or refresher training, and must be refreshed a minimum of every three years.
Per the California Department of Public Health, Safety Unlimited, Inc. is authorized to offer 4 Contact Hours (0.4 CEUs) of Continuing Education (CE) for this program.
While these CE units are intended for Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS) in California, they are often transferred to other accrediting bodies. Please check with your specific agency for more details and to learn if your agency accepts this course for CE credit (Public Health Accreditation #044).

Following the completion of all training content and achievement of passing scores on all exams, students will need to complete a brief evaluation and confirm his/her identity. After doing so, the student will have access to the course completion certificate.
This fully narrated course is built for success, and includes interactions, exercises, and quiz questions intended to help prepare students for the final exam. Students must answer each quiz question and complete each interaction in order to proceed.
This course has one final exam. The final exam consists of 25 questions randomly selected from a larger pool of questions. A score of 70% or better is required to pass the final exam. If a student does not pass the first time, they may retake the exam as many times as necessary in order to pass.
The objectives of the DOT General Awareness training course are to meet the Federal Department of Transportation training requirements of 49 CFR 172.704(a)(1) and 49 CFR Part 172 Subpart H.
General awareness/familiarization training. Each hazmat employee shall be provided general awareness/familiarization training designed to provide familiarity with the requirements of this subchapter, and to enable the employee to recognize and identify hazardous materials consistent with the hazard communication standards of this subchapter.

A complete DOT Hazardous Materials training curriculum must include:
Each Hazmat Employer must train, test and certify each Hazmat Employee within 90 days of employment. Recurrent training is required at least once every 3 years.
Initial training is required within 90 days for new employees or employees who assume new hazmat related responsibilities. Until they are trained, these employees may perform a hazardous materials employee function only under direct supervision.
DOT requires that hazmat employees be retrained and tested at least once every three years. However, the FAA, under 14 CFR, requires training for air carrier employees every two years.
Both the DOT and FAA require employers to maintain training records.
Depending on your specific occupation your employer may also require you to take OSHA, EPA, or other hazardous materials response training.

A person whose employee(s) perform the following functions:
The term "hazmat employer" also includes any department, agency, or instrumentality of the United States, a State, a political subdivision of a State, or an Indian tribe engaged in offering or transporting hazmat in commerce.
A person who is employed by a hazardous materials employer and directly affects hazardous materials (hazmat) transportation safety.

Function-specific training is hazardous materials training required as part of your job, but is not covered by any of the other core DOT courses (e.g., General Awareness, Security Awareness, Safety Awareness, etc.). Our current function-specific course options include the following:

Modal-specific training is hazardous materials transportation training that is specific to the mode of transportation by which a hazmat is conveyed. There are four DOT modal-specific courses, one for each mode of transportation:
In-depth Security training is required when an employer is required by 49 CFR 172.800(b) to have an In-depth Security plan. This training is site specific and covers actions taken by employees according to the employer's plan. In-depth security training is not currently offered.
Drivers of motor vehicles that transport hazardous materials must have training that involves how to safely transport a hazardous material by highway. This may involve a wide variety of driver safety courses. Driver training is not currently offered.
